LinksAchieving success togetherLea Valley is a centre of excellence for education in every sense. We want our students to leave here as ambitious and determined young men and women who understand the value of lifelong learning, and understand their responsibilities as good citizens of modern Britain. InnovationLea Valley is the first school in the UK to run classes based on ability rather than age. From Year 10 to Year 13, with the exception of Maths, English and Science, our students follow a 'vertical' curriculum. This means that each class is made up from a mix of students aged 14 to 19 with the same teacher, sharing the same resources. This unique arrangement means that students enter courses at a level appropriate to their ability and are able to progress through the curriculum pathways at their own pace. Our students are inspired to work together, to support and lead each other, and to broaden their thinking beyond the bounds of conventional learning. Active enquiryLearning at Lea Valley is focused on active enquiry and independent problem solving. Our students have excellent resources and opportunities in every field of study, and we work hard to accommodate their needs as individuals. We respond to different learning styles with a variety of teaching methods, and we have a commitment to continual professional development. Our success in public examinations and value added achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers and support staff. Intensive learningMost GCSE subjects at Lea Valley are taken intensively in one year. Our students are able to really concentrate their energy and enthusiasm in this time, reducing the risk of losing knowledge and skills during the long summer holidays. The satisfaction of gaining qualifications at the end of Year 10 is also a great motivation for our students: they learn to take pride in their achievements and to reach for further success. Working togetherCo-operation, communication and skills development are important at Lea Valley. Our students are encouraged to work together, to make plans, and to take responsibility for their learning in every discipline. We believe that they should participate fully in school life, and we provide superb facilities and opportunities for all. LeadershipWe want our students to lead others and to make independent decisions with confidence and certainty. We offer significant opportunities for leadership at every stage of school life, and we know how important this is to our students' self esteem and motivation. We train and coach our students to become classroom leaders, learning prefects, learning council members and sports leaders. They are encouraged to take pride and ownership in their school, and to contribute to the success of our community at every level of ability and achievement. Every child mattersLea Valley has a calm, focused and supportive approach to school life, and high standards of academic achievement. Our students are supported and encouraged to achieve their very best at all times. They make plans and set targets for continual achievement and, in close partnership with parents, we carefully monitor their progress as individuals. The roles of our staff compliment each other to achieve this. In addition to our teachers, we have a dedicated team of student welfare co-ordinators who are always available to support the day-to-day needs of the students. Positive assertive disciplineLea Valley promotes Positive, Assertive Discipline (PAD). We have constant and positive reinforcement of good behaviour, and very high standards in every area of school life. Our students know what we expect of them, and understand the consequence and meaning of their behaviour. We believe in proper communication with parents too, and we keep them very well informed, using text messaging and the Internet as well as standard school reports and consultations. |
