Lea Valley High School’s Paralympics Gamesmakers
This year, London experienced the most fantastic summer of sport while hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Many London schools got the opportunity to go to the Games through the Mayors Leagcy free ticket scheme.
At Lea Valley High School we had over 200 students visit various events at the games ranging from watching Usain Bolt and Jessica Ennis in the Olympic Stadium to Greco Roman Wrestling to Paralympic Goalball. All the students had a fantastic time and an experience that will last a lifetime.
We also had a group of students who successfully applied and were chosen to be Gamesmakers at the Paralympics. Anyone who went to the games saw the fantastic job that over 70,000 volunteers did and they really were the face of the games. Our students were chosen to be ‘Kit Carriers’ for the Track and Field athletes, this means that we had access to the Olympic Stadium. We had to carry boxes onto the track for the athletes before the start of the race, when the athletes had finished their final preparations they put their kit into the boxes and we took them to the athletes kit collection room.
It really was a once in a lifetime experience, we got to be part of the games, meeting and working with the athletes and walking out onto the track in front of 80,000 people! It was hard work, nerve racking at times but so exciting and rewarding. All of us will take the memories with us and use the positive message from these Games into later life.
